The only very helpful. I am a newbie to growing figs. I bought two trees. I put them both in. 15 gallon grow bags both multi trunk but the wind blew one of them over and split right down the middle of the main stem. I taped it up kept it watered and everything looked good for about 3 to 4 weeks and then I took that one and planted it in the ground when I was planning a bunch of blueberries and peach trees and cherry trees that fig tree just died on me. The other one’s doing fine. I’m getting beautiful black figs off of it. It’s still in a grow bag. And the things were so delicious. I went and bought three more varieties an LSU gold a Celeste and I know the one that LSU developed. I think it’s across with a Celeste, but at the bottom of all of them, there’s five of six long 2 1/2 to 3 foot stem is coming off of a man trunk. My question to you is what do you look for in buying a fig tree? Should I look for just a single stem coming up well away from the ground before it starts dividing into other branches or is having all of those branches coming up within 2 to 3 inches of the ground OK?

We live in Wisconsin now, and it would be fantastic to have a potted fig which could be in our house in the winter and outside in the summer. I’ve read that you should overwinter them above 20 and under 50. We don’t have something like that (our basement is too hot, and our garage is too cold). Does a fig need that cold spell during the winter, or could we just bring it when the weather turns.
